Fear not, I have not abandoned my blog. I had a Physiology exam on Thursday, then my neuroanatomy final yesterday (let's not talk about neuro - there's still a shoe up my arse from being kicked so hard), so I was studying for neuro all weekend (well, most of the weekend). I might as well have had Dan come out to visit, cuz I probably would have done the same, but at least I would have had a good weekend.
"Bend it Like Beckham"...
So yesterday night, I went to watch "Bend it Like Beckham" at Janki and Dipal's place. Awesome movie. It's about an Indian girl in England (it's an English-made movie) whose very strict parents and very girlie sister don't want her to play soccer. If the title befuddles you, "bend it" is English slang for kicking a soccer ball (either kicking it, shooting for the goal, or playing soccer in general, I can't remember which), and David Beckham is England's top pro soccer player - think England's Michael Jordan. And btw, he's married to Posh Spice. But yeah, it's a great movie. If not for the movie content, you gotta love it for the fact that they sing "Hot Hot Hot" in Hindi (I think - I have to remember to ask Preeti which dialect that was).
You know you're tired when...
You fall asleep at a bar (well, a table at a bar)... and you're not even drunk. Thursday after the phys exam we went to Mickey's to hang out. We ended up watching the lakers/Timberwolves game, and it went into OT. Well, I hadn't been sleeping well for a while, so I was slightly tired, but I figured I'd be fine. So I was sitting there with my chin resting on my hands, watching the game, and next thing I know, I hear someone go "Are you serious? She's actually asleep? Ohhh, don't take a picture of her!" So I open my eyes to find Val in front of me, camera at the ready. She goes, "Aw, you looked so cute and comfortable!" So to placate her, I put my head back down so she could take a picture. As you can imagine, I got a lot of crap Friday morning in class.
I actually miss marching band now...
Watched "Drumline" on Friday night (I needed a study break) with the Scooby Gang. I loved it! It made me miss marching band. During the band's performance at the competition, the DVD starts stuttering and I'm going, "Beau! Make it better! Fix it! Fix it!!" I couldn't get to that part of the movie and not be able to finish it. Dude, that last drumming sequence... ooohhhh... I don't think I blinked once, and I'm pretty sure my jaw was wide open. Beau and Jenn must have gotten a kick out of me. It was like watching "Bring it On" with someone who was a cheerleader.
Tuesday's This-or-That ...
Take Comfort... Which is more comforting for you...
1. Lying down on the couch, or stretching out on a recliner? Lying down on the couch, facing the TV. I don't have a recliner at my place. Although a recliner would probably be nice to have...
2. Going barefoot or wearing soft slippers? Barefoot on carpeting, soft slippers on hardwood or tile floors.
3. Eating ice cream, or pizza? Both, dude!
4. Watching on TV...a classic movie or a reality show? Classic movie. Reality shows are becoming a bit old, even disturbing (helloooo, "Married by America"), yet somehow can be very addictive.
5. Wearing: blue jeans or sweat pants? Sweat pants. But not if I'm going out or to school or something - in that case it's blue jeans. But God bless medical school, because I can wear SCRUBS!
6. A long, soothing bubble bath or a quick, invigorating shower? I'm more of a shower person. Nice, warm, long showers.
7. Furniture: leather, or something more on the fuzzy side? I like fuzzy.
8. Soft, classical music, or upbeat rock & roll? Depends on the mood. Soft classical is good if I'm going for calm.
9. Darkness or light? How's about dim light? Especially if I'm going for comfort.
10. Thought-provoking question of the week: You get married, or otherwise begin cohabitating with a significant other. S/he moves into your place, but brings with them the UGLIEST chair you have ever seen! You really don't want this thing in your home, but SO says it is the most comfy chair s/he has ever sat in, and no way will they part with it. Do you: grin and bear it, or scheme to get rid of the montrosity somehow? This is exactly why God invented slipcovers. It's all about compromise. He gets his ugly but comfy chair, and I get my pretty slipcover.
Remember Maria from "Head of the Class"? Looks like she's on "CSI" now. She's not a regular, but it looks like she could be a recurring character. Still looks the same, her hair's just not as big.
1. When you buy a greetings card are the words or the picture more important to you? Usually words. but if it's a card based on a sight gag, then it's the picture.
2. What's your favourite kind of cake? I like chocolate cake and yellow cake.
3. Do you ever make gifts for people, if so what, or do you buy them? I like to make gifts if I have time to. I know how to etch glass (kinda), so I given a bunch of etched shot glasses or picture frames. I also cross stitch. But that takes too long now. Oh, and I bake. People seem to like that.
4. What's your favourite holiday - i.e. Christmas? Christmas. It's more than the presents to me. Not that I mind the presents - bring 'em on! But it's a big, fun holiday for my family - we're very close. Usually all us kids are there (at least for a while, it's harder now that we're older and some of us are married/dating), all the parents, and my Uncle plays Santa after Midnight Mass, and us kids stay up really late playing games and watching movies. Lots of good Christmas memories...
5. Are you going on holiday this year? If so, where? Not sure, I might have to work this summer. And I'm poor. But I went to Las Vegas after Christmas. Me and Dan might go to Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio to ride the tallest rollercoaster in the US (I think it is, not sure).
6. What was the best party you've ever been to? Recently, I'd have to say Balaji and Vik's pajama jammy jam. It was cool to see almost everyone in my class, and dressed in their pj's, no less, all having a good time just hanging out and dancing.
7. If you are married, describe your wedding. If not, what would your ideal wedding be like? Tough question (I'm not married). All I know is, I want my family and friends there (including my pseudo-family), and the reception is going to be fun. Nothing stuffy for the reception. Good food, good music, and lots of dancing. And me in a kick-ass dress.
8. What's the most romantic thing that's ever happened to you? Well, Dan did a really good job planning our first anniversary weekend. But then 2 weekends ago he drove out to Iowa to surprise me! =) But I'll probably go with the anniversary weekend.
9. What's your favourite romantic song? I'm a sucker for a love song. I have so many favorites. But I love N'Sync's "This I Promise You" - the lyrics are thoughtful and really romantic, and the melody is beautiful. Go ahead and shake your heads, Dan and Tall Steve.
10. Which celebrity would you like a dream date with? Ooooh... George Eads from CSI.
11. Which female celebrity do you find beautiful? Natalie Portman - she's pretty AND smart.
12. Which male celebrity do you think is attractive? Uh, George Eads. He's cute AND he's got the most adorable Texas drawl.
13. If you could be a fictional character from a book who would you choose? I can identify with Piglet from the Winnie the Pooh stories... I'm small, I worry a lot. Hmm, I don't know. I'm borderline illiterate. =P
14. If you could be in a television sit-com, which would you choose? Aw, does it have to be a sitcom? Screw that, you're not the boss of me. I'm going to say CSI. I'm such a science geek. And George Eads is hot.
15. Which character would you like to be? I don't care as long as I get to make out with George Eads.
16. What's your favourite girl's name? I've always liked Emily
17. What's your favourite boy's name? Ian or Ethan
18. What's your supermarket of choice? Why? I miss Dominick's at home, but Super WalMart rocks. It's got the grocery store plus all the stuff regular WalMart has, it's huge, and it's open 24 hours.
19. What is your best character trait? People say I'm sweet, friendly. Patient.
20. What is your worst habit? I worry a lot... among other things. I'll admit, I nag sometimes.
Claud needs a job...
I've decided I'll probably be doing temp jobs this summer, since I'll only be home for less than 2 months. I'll likely earn more temping than I would working in the lab, but I've emailed my old boss anyway. We'll see what happens. Does anyone in the Chicago area have any suggestions for good temp agencies?
1. Yummier: Chocolate ice cream or strawberry cheesecake? What, you mean I can't have both?
2. Better to watch on TV: Movies or sports? Movies - I prefer watching sports live. But then again, I watch hockey on tv a lot.
3. A better web browser: MSIE or Netscape? I'm really not picky. But I use MSIE. Dan, however, would say Mozilla.
4. A better way to travel: Automobile or bus/train? Hmmm.. as I am not the most experienced driver, I would say train, but cars can be more fun, since it's your own space.
5. Your preferred camera: Digital or film? Digital seems to be a better way to go - you waste less shots, and you can always get them printed on photo paper...
6. A Cooler Vehicle: Motorcycle or sports car? Sports car - I prefer to be surrounded by metal.
7. More fun: Video games or board games? Board games...you can get more people involved. Unless it's my family and we're playing Thrill Kill.
8. Sexier: A perfect body or an intelligent mind? An intelligent mind. Beauty fades, the perfect body doesn't last forever, and sometimes the perfect body can't hold a conversation worth $hit.
9. A stinkier smell: Skunk or gasoline (petrol)? Skunk is stinkier, but smelling gasoline always makes me nervous.
10. Thought-provoking question of the week: What is more important to you: making a ton of money and being at the top of your field, or finding your soulmate and living a comfortable but not wealthy life? Living a comfortable life with my soulmate. Money can't buy happiness, and being at the top of your field means making a lot of sacrifices that I'm not willing to give up. I'm fine with being one of the fishes in the pond... I don't need to be the shark.
I'm gradually becoming used to the idea that there's no good news that doesn't have some bad news attached to it. On a good note, my mom's home from the hospital. Unfortunately, things aren't really better. Pardon my negative mood, but my mom's been thrown an orchard of lemons and I'm having trouble making lemonade out of them. It's one of those times when I wish I wasn't in medical school, that I didn't know the things that I know. My mom amazes me. I'm sitting here, near tears, and she's telling me not to worry. With all the crap she's dealing with, she's telling me not to worry. And my dad, he's been so strong through all of this. He's at her side nearly 24/7, he takes such good care of her, he makes sure she eats, makes her drink her Glucerna (she doesn't like the way it tastes) because it's good for her. He bought a stethoscope the other day. He bought her a neck brace (she doesn't like to wear it though...) to help support her neck. He barely left her side when she was in the hospital. My parents are amazing. I can't say enough about them. I love them so very much...
Yay for the Asian Guy!
So to get my mind off things, Dan told me about how the Minnesota Wild beat the Colorado Avalanche in overtime in the NHL playoffs opening round. Dan and I are Avs fans. How is this supposed to make me happy, you ask (I asked the same thing)? Well, it doesn't (now they have to play a game 7) really, but the guy who scored the tying AND the winning goal, Richard Park, is Asian! Korean, if I'm not mistaken. So yay for Asians in the NHL! Now all we have to do is get a Filipino into the NHL and I'm all good.
Feeling a little better now...
Talked to Dan, so I'm feeling a bit better. Then Pokey called, I spilled my guts a little, and she offered to come over and bring Jenn. It's nice that I have good friends out here who try to take care of me. Oh yeah, and I helped Pokey set up her internet dial-up to the school's line, so that was a nice confidence booster. Yay for me! Yes, I know it's not difficult, but I'm not exactly a computer genius. It's about those little victories...
I know, I know, I should be studying for the multitude of exams I have coming up. But one must take a break lest I start talking to my stuffed animals, and God forbid they start talking back.
Anyhoo... went home Friday afternoon, got to talk to my mom on the phone. That was really reassuring, because part of me was worried that my family wasn't telling me everything on the phone (presumably to avoid me hearing bad news while I'm relatively alone in Des Moines). Update on mom - she's still in the hospital as far as I know, check details on Christine's blog (she's at home with the folks). She's doing better, itching to get out of the hospital. Anyhoo, got a couple of OMT's done on Dan and Dave, so at least I was productive. And Dan brought me multitudes of Easter presents! Christine, did you take any pictures of Exelby - if you did, can you email one to me? I'll fill you in on Exelby later.
Early Saturday afternoon, we all went to the hospital to hang out with mom. She's in good hands there, I can tell. Between my dad spending his every waking moment with her, and the nurses and doctors, I feel good about the care she's getting. Walking in and meeting them, it seemed like they knew who we were (outside of which one of us was which), just from everything my mom has told them about us. And the nurses told us how sweet and happy my mom is. My mom is amazing. She's been dealt such a crappy hand, but she's fighting, and she's still so strong and upbeat. So if you don't mind, please keep the prayers coming...
Saturday later afternoon was spent trying on bridesmaid dresses for Christine's wedding. Once again, had my life threatened while trying on dresses. That was fun - we've got a fun set of bridesmaids, so we spent the whole time laughing. Then afterwards, we went to Baker's Square. Probably a big mistake on my part. Ate too much, too fast. Thought I was gonna hurl in the restaurant (which probably doesn't help my constant insistence that I do not have an eating disorder - Seriously, I don't, I swear, no matter what Christine says). Ended up taking an hour long nap. Made lasagna that night (for our Easter party on Sunday) with Christine's help (she layered and boiled the noodles), plus cake for Tita Vicky's birthday.
Sooo... refer to the next post for Sunday morning's activities. After church, we went to the hospital to visit mom before the family Easter shindig at Tita Vicky's place. It was just me, my sisters, and my Tita Ely at the hospital, then Tita Ellen, Tito Roni, and Melanie came. It was funny - just before we had gotten to the hospital, Tita Vicky had called my mom asking when everyone was going to show up, because no one was there yet and it was almost noon. Well, a big chunk of us were at the hospital... with a lot of food for the party, no less. So after drooling over mom's lunch (dang, hospital food has gotten a lot better in the last few years), she made us go to the party (dad included, she wanted him to eat real food). The party was fun, lots of yummy good food. Ate like a pig. Nice to see the cousins again. Haven't seen Marlon in months (he was in Brazil), so it was nice to see him. Wish I could have stayed longer, but I had to leave early to get to the airport before 3. So off me and Dan jetted to O'Hare. It was good to be home. It's weekends like this that make me really miss home, and even question why I decided to go so (relatively) far away for school. But I know that this is probably for the best. And I'll be home again soon... I can't wait.
Best Easter Sunday Mass EVER...
For the first part of why this was the best Easter Sunday Mass ever, you'll have to ask Christine. I fear that if I am the one to tell the story, I'll be beaten up. So on to the next story... So in the Catholic Mass, there's a very quiet part after Holy Communion and the final prayer. There's lots of young kids in our parish, and there were a bunch crying and making noise. One kid in particular was having a major fit, and during this moment of silence, he just yells out at the top of his lungs, "I DON'T WANT TO BE IN CHURCH ANYMORE!!!" OMG, I almost peed my pants. The whole church was laughing, the priest and the deacon were laughing, it was priceless.
please say prayers for my mom... she had a fever tonight, so my dad took her to the hospital to be safe, and they're keeping her for observation. So please please keep her in your prayers...thanks...
1. File taxes as early as possible, or wait until the last possible minute? I'm a procrastinator... if I had to do them myself (my parents had mine done for me - i'm eligible for this lifetime learning tax credit thing and we didn't want to have to figure it out), it would be mailed in 2-3 days before the postmark deadline (I don't usually wait until the very very last minute, that would make me too nervous)
2. File electronically, or mail paper forms? Electronically if possible
3. Prepare your own taxes, or have someone do it for you? my parents have someone do all of ours. saves us all stress.
4. Are you a saver or a spender? i have my moments, but i try to be a saver
5. Do you prefer to carry cash, or pay with plastic (credit/debit cards), or by check? usually plastic - debit card preferably, so i don't get a big surprise via my credit card bill at the end of the month.
6. You're broke and desperately need a job, but the only places that are hiring are retail or fast food places. Which would you pick? although either would drive me crazy, i'd go retail... i like fast food, and i don't want to ruin the magic for myself.
7. Keeping track of your money: are you more meticulous or careless about it? i try to be careful (i wouldn't say meticulous), since the us department of education owns me right now.
8. What do you do if you find yourself with a lot of change weighing down your purse/pocket/wallet? Do you try to spend it to *get rid of it*, or do you put it in a jar or a piggy bank? i save all the quarters for laundry, then i try to use as much as i can when i buy stuff. anything else gets put in a bank.
9. Which form of fake money do you like better...Monopoly money or those chocolate coins covered with gold foil? hello, chocolate!
10. Thought-provoking question of the week: You find a wallet containing $5,000 in cash, as well as several credit cards and the owner's drivers' license. Your rent is due tomorrow and you're short $200. Do you take the money (some or all of it) and mail back the wallet anonymously...or do you return the wallet with all contents intact? i would probably return the wallet with all the contents intact. i have this humongous guilt complex that would prevent me from doing otherwise. being my overly trusting self, i would hope that there would be some kind of reward... hopefully...
Happy Birthday Marlon!
On the off chance you should happen to read my blog.
Went running today. Not sure how far I ran/walked, but I was out for about 20 minutes. Now to those of you who say, why is she running, she need not lose weight... I'm not doing it for that, I'm attempting to be healthy. So here's what I learned, in no specific order.
1. Don't run past a guard dog. They like to make everyone in a 20-mile radius know you're there by barking, while attempting to run after you. Thank goodness it was chained up.
2. Squirrels and chain-link fences are a scary combination. Especially when the squirrel is jumping from a tree onto/into the chain-link fence. It was so loud, and the squirrel was so close, it scared the living crap out of me. I do believe I yelled "WHOA!" out loud, thinking that the squirrel was going to pounce on me next.
3. Hills are not my friend.
4. If you try to run around a plot of land, say a cemetery, make sure that the plot is surrounded by running surfaces on all four sides to avoid having to run an extra 4 blocks because there's nowhere to run around it.
5. I am not a natural runner. I know people who can go on for miles upon miles, run for hours. Nope, not me. I'm good with my 15-30 minute spurts with sporadic walking.
So Friday night, I was just sitting in my apartment, studying, and Dan calls around 11 as usual. He was calling from his cell phone, which I didn't really think anything of. He tells me he's driving home from a wrestling show. I thought that was odd, but he said that the wrestling company had shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of this week, yeah, it's not common, but it's a promo. So we talked for a bit, he asked me what I was doing, then he said, "hold on, let me call you when I get inside the house." And so we hung up. Now in my overly hopeful head I'm thinking, "wouldn't it be awesome if he was actually calling from outside my apartment and he was just walking up the stairs and then I hear a knock at the door?" At this point I should probably tell you that my schedule up until the end of the semester is pretty tight, and this is my last relatively free weekend. But as I'm sitting there continuing to study, more time elapses and I come to the realization that no, he's probably trying to find a parking spot at home, and he's not in Des Moines. Then, lo and behold, there's a knock at my door... and it's Dan! No wonder why he kept asking me what I was doing this weekend. Good thing I didn't end up going to play pool with Pokey on Friday night, otherwise he would've had to hang out at WalMart until I got home. School's been wearing me down as of late, and a surprise like this is just what the doctor ordered. So granted, not much studying was done yesterday, but I needed the sanity break. We did some shopping (bought the new Harry Potter DVD! Too bad I have to wait till I get home to watch it - poor med student doesn't own a dvd player), some cooking (pizza from scratch), watched the NHL playoffs (nothing like watching almost 6 straight hours of hockey!) and Iron Chef. Just got to hang out on a lazy Saturday with my sweetheart. He left early today =( (so I could study, plus the there's Chicago Wolves playoff game he's going to later this afternoon)... so now I'm studying. Back to the daily grind. Peh. So thank you to my sweetie for surprising me...
Disclaimer - I'm sure these answers might change if I actually took a bit of time to think really hard about them, but here's what I could think of in 15 minutes...
1. What was the first band you saw in concert? I think it was Hootie and the Blowfish. I had a good time.
2. Who is your favorite artist/band now? Oooh, rough one. Hmm, I've always liked U2's music. In terms of newer acts... I love Norah Jones' voice, and her music is very soothing. And I really like Pink's newest album.
3. What's your favorite song? I have a bunch of favorites. The Calling's "Wherever You Will Go" is one, and Lea Salonga's "The Journey"... she has a great voice, and I love the lyrics. And "Nessum Dorma" - especially the version Luciano Pavarotti sings. I don't know what it is about that song, but the melody is incredibly beautiful to me. I mean, I was watching someone sing it on "Six Feet Under" the other week and I darn near burst into tears it was so beautiful. And you gotta love Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me".
4. If you could play any instrument, what would it be? Some sort of string instrument. The guitar would be cool, but the violin just sounds so pretty, well, once you actually get good at playing it.
5. If you could meet any musical icon (past or present), who would it be and why? Hmm, maybe Beethoven. He managed to churn out a lot of beautiful music despite being deaf. I'm curious to know how he did it. I'm sure there are others I'd like to meet, though.
It just sounds so wrong...
Has anyone seen the Fox commercial for "Michael Jackson's Home Movies"? The title alone just sounds baaaad...
hee hee... i like bunnies...
I was watching the new ToysRUs commercial on TV today. They're promoting an Easter sale, and they've got these bunnies singing "Peter Cottontail" (You know, "here comes peter cottontail, hoppin down the bunny trail"). And Geoffrey is like, "all right, all right, we'll have an easter sale! just make them stop!" as he's surrounded by bunnies singing this song. It's SOOOO cute! I was laughing for like 5 minutes after the commercial ended. Go ahead and shake your head, Dan. =P
I'm now "addicted" to "Animal Cops" on Animal Planet. I put addicted in quotes because I don't purposely look for it to be on, but I'll watch it when I do happen to catch it. It's kinda like "COPS" on Fox (go ahead, sing "Bad Boys" to yourself), except they follow ASPCA officers in various cities. It's interesting, I didn't know that ASPCA officers have pretty much the same powers as police officers. They just focus on protecting animals. It makes me sad and/or angry sometimes, though, to see how people treat animals. And it's a proven fact that people who abuse animals are more likely to be abusive towards people as well. It's nice to see the happy endings though. There can be a dog that was horribly abused by its previous owner that gets adopted by someone else, and a few months later, the dog seems much happier and you can tell it's loved. So here goes my plug for the ASPCA and the Humane Society... if you want to get an animal, adopt one from the ASPCA or the Humane Society. They don''t charge much, they're all healed up (physically, at least), the animal will already have been spayed or neutered (that alone saves you a couple hundred bucks), and odds are, the animal will be thrilled to be living in a better, more loving environment. So there.
Uh, someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that it's APRIL.
So we've had 3 straight days of snow so far. Oh, and it snowed/hailed on Friday, too. There's about 2-3 inches accumulated right now. It's stopped snowing, though. And the meteorologists are predicting that it's be 70-80 degrees by the weekend. I love schizophrenic weather, really I do.
1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life? 3 apartments and 1 house
2. Which was your favorite and why? Though each has their own special qualities, I'd have to say my house, mostly for sentimental reasons. It's where I grew up, it's where my family is, it's where the animals are. And our kitchen is huge compared to anywhere else I've ever lived.
3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why? Depends on the situation, although moving into my first apartment (well, the first apartment after the one we lived in when I was born) was exciting, because it was the first time I was semi- on my own. But stressful because I have a lot of stuff for someone my size, and packing and moving it and unpacking can get hairy. =)
4. What's more important, location or price? Price mostly, but I don't want to live in a crappy neighborhood that's unsafe.
5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)? A big yard would be cool. Walk-in closets are fun. A jacuzzi bath would be fun. A couple extra bedrooms for guests. But most importantly, since I love to cook, I want an awesome kitchen... Viking kitchen gas range and oven, big fridge, lots of storage, a pantry, marble-topped baking area, plenty of prep room to work with, a big table, the works... i'm drooling just thinking about it... and of course, a family. =)
I don't know what happened to my comments. If you get a moment, please either fix me, or tell me what to do... not like that many people comment anyhoo, but it's nice to have the option. Thanks sisterfriend!
Ugh. i'll leave it at that. 5 hours of my life i won't get back. at least i was kinda sorta studying, but ugh.
thank god for post-it notes...
My memory is shot. I actually had to ask Jenn how old I was the other day, because for the life of me i couldn't remember if i was 23 or 24. oh, geez...
I am special.
Yup. I'm now the Vice President of the Des Moined University Sports Medicine Club. I think I really won them over with my opening line of "Okay, so I'm really not an athlete...I got manhandled at the Malpractice Bowl" (the Malpractice Bowl was a football tournament we had with the law students -the overly whiny law students, i must add- from Drake University. I did get manhandled - clipped, pushed, thrown... but i still sacked that whiny-ass QB!). Our officer core looks really cool, we've already got a bunch of ideas. I'm really looking forward to it.
